Virality Tracking framework for Fortune Video Streaming Company
Bespoke virality tracking methodology built for speed and precision

Business Problem
Our client, YouTube and Google needed to understand how a major cultural moment unfolds in real time on social media. The ever-changing dynamics of digital platforms meant that when a high-profile content release occurred, the client needed to be able to track, analyze, and respond to the virality phenomenon as it happened, not hours or days later.
The specific challenge: BLACKPINK, one of the world's most followed music groups, was releasing their music video 'How You Like That'. YouTube anticipated record-breaking viewership and engagement, but lacked the real-time intelligence infrastructure to capture the nuances of how fans, media, and influencers were driving the phenomenon, and to understand any negative sentiment or platform issues as they surfaced.
Solution
We deployed a bespoke virality tracking methodology built for speed and precision. Our approach drew from multiple data sources simultaneously, social media platforms, secondary sources, and digital channels, and applied a rigorous human-plus-tools validation process to filter out noise, spam, and irrelevant content in real time.
Using our proprietary analytical methodology, we tracked the BLACKPINK 'How You Like That' music video release from the moment it went live, capturing:
• Hourly volume patterns: the first major spike in coverage hit 6AM EST with 174,000 mentions, peaking at 7AM EST with 235,000. We tracked every rise and dip throughout the day, including the evening uptick when BLACKPINK's YouTube subscriber base surpassed 38.3 million.
• Record-breaking milestones: social media conversations were dominated by posts about the multitude of records broken by the video, alongside organic calls to fans to drive up viewership on the platform.
• Sentiment analysis: we monitored the emotional tone of fan content in real time, distinguishing between celebration, excitement, and any pockets of negativity.
• Negativity tracking: while the overall tone was overwhelmingly positive, we identified a strand of fan complaints about 'frozen views' on YouTube. Our analysis confirmed this negativity had no material impact on the broader excitement driving virality.
• Competitor context: we benchmarked the BLACKPINK release performance against comparable events to provide context for the records being broken.
Benefits
The client received hour-by-hour intelligence on one of the most significant viral content events of the year. Key outcomes included:
• A complete, real-time picture of the virality phenomenon: not just headline numbers, but the hourly nuances that explained how and why the video broke records.
• Early identification of the 'frozen views' issue: allowing the client to monitor whether this complaint gained traction and assess whether a platform response was needed.
• Fan sentiment data that gave the client a clear read on audience mood throughout the release window: crucial for real-time content and social strategy decisions.
• A validated, documented case study of how a major music video virality event unfolds, giving YouTube and Google a replicable framework for tracking future high-profile releases.
